Gut Diversity: The Importance of Expanding The Palate

Achieving Gut diversity is one of the most important things we can do for our health.  The goal, as always, should be to keep the stomach and body constantly guessing about what meal will come next.

I personally believe there is no such thing as “good bacteria” in the gut.  Rather, I believe each strain of bacteria needs to be kept in check.  We do this by eating a varied diet and not consuming too much of one food…

Each Strain of Bacteria serves a unique purpose in the gut microbiome.  Eating what the land offers up each and every month is the best way to achieve optimal gut diversity.

The Waorani Tribe: Perfect Gut Diversity

Deep within the Ecuadorian Rain Forest lives a tribe free from the rulers of the land.  The Waorani, have lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years.  They eat what the land provides and have a deep understanding of both hunting and plant medicine.

It’s estimated that The Waorani consume over 80 different fruits throughout the year.  Each fruit is seasonally rotated and contains unique phytochemicals that aid in The Waorani’s robust health (1).  It’s important to understand that these fruits are not like your typical store bought fruits.  They are in fact wild fruits, many of which are extremely bitter and sour.

Interestingly, the Waorani consume ZERO vegetables. They will actually get nauseous and vomit if they consume vegetables. Unlike fruits, vegetables have developed toxic phytochemicals which protect it from being eaten (2).

As well as consuming large amounts of wild fruit, the Waorani eat between a pound and a pound and a half of meat a day (3)!

Many of the tribesman hunt well into their 70’s.  In fact, once into adulthood, it’s extremely hard to tell how old these people truly are.  Again, this can be attributed to living in nature, walking barefoot, eating wild food, and a tight knit community.

The Waorani people are living proof of what life could and should be like for all of us…

What We can learn From The Waorani People

Like The Waorani, you should be aiming to achieve as much variety in your diet as possible.  Refrain from eating out of season and consume wild foods when possible.

Also, stay away from hybridized fruits that have no medicinal value.  As mentioned before, many of the fruits that the Waorani consume are extremely bitter and sour.  This is a clear indication that a food has some sort of medicinal value.

Fruits that don’t contain seed and fruits that are overly sweet from selective breeding should be avoided.

Also avoid consuming too much of one particular food.  It’s not natural to have year round access to a particular food.  When we begin to go against Nature’s natural laws, our health begins to suffer.

The Current State Of Our Planet

The Waorani are the perfect example of how simple and fulfilling life was prior to the agricultural revolution.  In fact, many (including myself), envy the lifestyle the Waorani are able to live.

Unfortunately, there seems to a be a select few who are hell bent on destroying the Earth and all that it has to offer.

These people worship money and not the beauty of life or the gift of life…

A colonist approached the Native American with an offer he thought he couldn’t refuse.  He told the Indian, “come work for me, and when your 65 I will release you of your duties and you will be able to hunt and fish and do as you please until the day you die.  The Indian responded, “But friend, I already hunt and fish and do as I please, why do I need you to do that?”
